How to sustainably develop the city of Karlovac along the Korana River?
Floods, contents, identity
Raising the embankment as a network of promenades in relation to the Korana River will prevent frequent flooding of the area and will provide a panoramic view of the Korana River. Promenades are generated from the logical directions of the movement towards the facilities and buildings set by the program. The consequence of the network of promenades is the formation of green islands that frame individual contents (recreational open spaces, pavilions, buildings).
Green islands are of gentle slopes, depressions or hills and each is characterized by unique content. Sometimes they open, and sometimes they hide the contents behind the carefully selected scenography of the most diverse horticultural groups. The coverage is devoid of car penetration because parking takes place on the side road.
Landscape
The concept of the park solution of the new space is a fusion of forest and botanical garden along the river Korana. The idea is to stage an artificial source of the Korana, a river that is special because it has no source. The Korana river originates as a continuation of the Plitvice Lakes.
The light motif of the park design relies on the natural landscape of the coast and tries to disperse it to its full extent by adding a great wealth of species such as ones we can find in the botanical garden.
Sustainability of the concept
The park catchment does not touch the river bank itself, respecting the existing beauty of the natural landscape. Today, the generally accepted attitude in Europe is to preserve river banks in order to maintain ecological balance. Along the river, there is already lush vegetation of willows and poplars, whose natural habitat is related to water, and as such, they will thrive best in this area. The emphasis here is on the trees because of their important role both in the urban planning of the space and in the ecological aspect. We are at a climate turning point and each of our newly planned spaces must be sustainable, supporting 'green' awareness and environmental standards.
Affirming the direction of sustainable urban planning, integrating the landscape into planning principles, will put Karlovac's landscape-park tradition with contemporary design and new ecological postulates at the very top of good examples of identity design of cities and landscapes since one can't without the other.
